Medical Records and Anemia Management in Uganda

Here in Uganda, anemia is still quite a significant challenge. Annually, we register 53% of children, and 32% of our female adolescent population with anemia. Please note that these figures are just an indication of those visiting government health facilities.

Main Concern

One may wonder as to how exactly data on anemia is collected by the ministry of health in the private health facilities. Also, “what happens to the data of patients that don’t get to visit the health facility at all?”

I may also argue that the data collected is lacking in terms of authenticity, accuracy, and uniqueness. This data is on paper and is prone to human errors, wear and tear, humidity, and temperature. With this picture, I believe anemia is still a burden in Uganda and requires collective responsibility from all stakeholders.

My Opinion

Ugandans must adopt Electronic Medical Systems and achieve one of the 2030 Sustainable development goals.
With such data tracking systems, we shall be able to effectively process data being reported by all health facilities. This consequently allows proper decision making and better healthcare services.

In my next posts, we shall be analyzing anemia management in Uganda and the opportunities presented by EMR.
